Country music apparently has its origins in the folk music sung by Scottish settlers in the Appalachian Mountains. This folk music developed into the country and western music we know now with the influence of blues and other black music from the South.
The banjo which has its origins in an African folk music instrument, and the rhythms and lyrics of the blues were all incorporated into country music, which gained great popularity. In the 1930’s it became associated with then fashionable western movies, creating a fixed association of the cowboy with the country song.
The subjects of country music are usually lovers, mothers or life in prison. Some songs are very much like modern renditions of stories surrounding the lonely outsider cowboy.
カントリー・ミュージックは元々アパラチア山脈周辺に入植していた、スコットランドからの移民達が歌っていた民謡に起源があるようです。彼らの歌がカントリー・ミュージックに変化して行った原因は、南部から北上して来たブルース等の黒人音楽との出会いにあります。
アメリカ民族楽器に起源を持つバンジョーを楽器として取り入れ、ブルースの旋律やそこで語られた恋歌等の感覚を取り入れて、大衆音楽として成長したのです。特に１９３０年代になって、こうした音楽が映画界で流行した「西部劇」と結び付き、カウボーイとカントリー・ソングとを連結するイメージが定着しました。
カントリー・ソングで扱うテーマの代表は、恋人、母親、刑務所等で、世間に反抗して流れゆくカウボーイのロマンを現代風にアレンジした歌も多く見られます。
